Live boldly, laugh and make art

I am addicted to bananas.

I am addicted to bananas.

Yes, it’s true. I am an addict.  It is time to tell the truth. It is time to confess.  I am addicted to item #4011. Do you know what item that is?  Have you memorized the number of that item in the grocery store, when you go through the self check-out, like I have.

The banana is item #4011.

I have a friend pray for me to not eat bananas. I have an accountability team praying for my food choices. One friend  prays daily for my banana addiction.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.  James 5:16

I confess that I ate a banana yesterday. Wait, let me try again. I confess that I ate three bananas yesterday. I thought, “It is only a banana, I can handle this. One shouldn’t make me sick. Other people eat bananas, maybe today will be different.”

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Albert Einstein

You may be thinking, “Is Hodges mocking addiction? What is the big deal about eating a banana?”

God made my pancreas to over produce. My pancreas loves to make insulin. The foreman in the pancreas, yells to the factory workers, “Hey guys, we got a banana coming into the plant, make insulin to digest it.”

But the factory workers in my pancreas are trying to get a raise. They make more insulin than is needed for the banana. The insulin they produce processes the sugar from the banana, and it also processes all of the natural sugar in my blood that my brain needs to be fed.

My brain has no food, and I get headaches. I have trouble controlling my emotions. Okay, that means I get really angry.

On a normal day, or a day when I haven’t eaten a banana, spilled milk, or a cat barfing on the carpet, doesn’t upset me. I clean up the barf and smile. On a day with I have eaten a banana, cat barf makes me want to throw the cat out the window.

My friend prayed for my brain last night. Today I feel better.

My family has healthy pancreata, so the bananas are okay for them to eat. I was able to walk past the bowl of bananas on the kitchen table this morning and eat an apple instead.

I won’t be insane anymore. I won’t eat a  banana and expect a different result.

Do you ever eat food that you don’t want to eat?

Please let me know in the comments. I would love to chat.

  • I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to want to eat what is healthy – but you cant! It sounds crazy to me – yet I get what you’re saying….and health-wise it’s important that you keep that addiction under wraps! Give yourself a big hug for choosing that apple this morning!!

I eat what I know I shouldn’t often – more so when I’m tired! It drives me insane…and I get hopelessly annoyed with myself when my bad choices starts catching up with me! I need to pray about it more….I know….but for some reason I just don’t!

Hello Neritia. I pray you only put food that is good for you in your mouth today. Thank you for the hug!

  • Sue

Now I understand why your friends are praying for you to NOT eat bananas . . . they’re not so good for you. I’m sorry that they aren’t good for you, and that you enjoy them so much – bummer! I will pray for you, too (and I will probably think of you when I see bananas (especially the label!)).

    • pamelahodges

Thank you Sue. I appreciate the prayers.

  • I used to eat foods that weren’t good for me., but not anymore. Thank goodness, the Lord led me to a new and better way of eating. My cravings are gone, and my blood sugar doesn’t go crazy. I also get to eat lots of Item #4011. You might check out the Paleo plan.

Hello Shelley. How wonderful that you are eating food that is good for you. I checked out the Paleo diet, and that is how I eat now. No sugar or refined foods, no bread. Thank you for your suggestion. I am happy you can eat a lot of Item #4011. It’s not on my list anymore.

  • Oh yes, yes I do. Because I had a hard day and I deserve it. But then the next day after that will be harder still, because I deserved that chocolate cake/bag of popcorn/extra glass of wine/all three, and i will wake up feeling sluggish and low. Oh the madness of self destructive behavior. It is a wonderful thing to have friends who understand and will hold you accountable and not enable you.

Yes, the madness of self destructive behavior. Friends can really make a difference. Thank you for sharing.

  • Good post, Pamela. As always.

      Thank you Anne.
