I am addicted to bananas.
Yes, it’s true. I am an addict. It is time to tell the truth. It is time to confess. I am addicted to item #4011. Do you know what item that is? Have you memorized the number of that item in the grocery store, when you go through the self check-out, like I have.
The banana is item #4011.
I have a friend pray for me to not eat bananas. I have an accountability team praying for my food choices. One friend prays daily for my banana addiction.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16
I confess that I ate a banana yesterday. Wait, let me try again. I confess that I ate three bananas yesterday. I thought, “It is only a banana, I can handle this. One shouldn’t make me sick. Other people eat bananas, maybe today will be different.”
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
You may be thinking, “Is Hodges mocking addiction? What is the big deal about eating a banana?”
God made my pancreas to over produce. My pancreas loves to make insulin. The foreman in the pancreas, yells to the factory workers, “Hey guys, we got a banana coming into the plant, make insulin to digest it.”
But the factory workers in my pancreas are trying to get a raise. They make more insulin than is needed for the banana. The insulin they produce processes the sugar from the banana, and it also processes all of the natural sugar in my blood that my brain needs to be fed.
My brain has no food, and I get headaches. I have trouble controlling my emotions. Okay, that means I get really angry.
On a normal day, or a day when I haven’t eaten a banana, spilled milk, or a cat barfing on the carpet, doesn’t upset me. I clean up the barf and smile. On a day with I have eaten a banana, cat barf makes me want to throw the cat out the window.
My friend prayed for my brain last night. Today I feel better.
My family has healthy pancreata, so the bananas are okay for them to eat. I was able to walk past the bowl of bananas on the kitchen table this morning and eat an apple instead.
I won’t be insane anymore. I won’t eat a banana and expect a different result.
Do you ever eat food that you don’t want to eat?
Please let me know in the comments. I would love to chat.
