Live boldly, laugh and make art

In the morning…

In the morning...

It was still dark when I woke up this morning. The only light in my bedroom was from my alarm clock. The sun wouldn’t rise for another hour.  I walked downstairs, and fed the cats.

Usually the first thing I do in the morning after I feed the cats is check my e-mail. Then I write a story, answer comments, and read other blogs. I eat breakfast, wash dishes, and throw a load in the laundry. I drag my bible out Friday nights for a bible study, and sometimes I take my bible to church on Sunday. I usually just read the verse on the screen behind the pastor.

For a few months in 1998 I read a chapter in Proverbs every day. One year I read through the whole bible.  I pray when I need something or when I am sick. Last week I prayed a couple of times and I prayed this morning.

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing.
Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.
In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.
Psalm 5:1-3

This morning after I fed the  cats, I opened my bible and read Psalm 5. Then I prayed.

I spend time with my friends to get to know them better. If I want to know more about Jesus I need to spend time with him. I just read the first chapter in Mark. Even Jesus prayed.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Mark: 1:35

I am working on creating new habits. Tomorrow I will read my bible after I feed the cats. I will pray and then I will write.

Now I will go and eat my breakfast, spinach and sardines.

What did you do this morning? What did you eat for breakfast?

Please let my know in the comments. I would love to chat.

In the morning … which begins about 5:10 am – I “wet” the dog and cat and feed them. Then I turn on my electric tea kettle, take my shower, pour hot water into my French press and take the dog out for a more formal “do” while my coffee steeps. Then I sit and knit. Right now I measure my morning in a cable at a time. Then I finish getting ready for work, pack a lunch and go. But next week my new habit might include swimming laps as I have just joined a gym.

I’ve got to figure out how to get those cables done though, my son-in-law is waiting for his first hand-knit sweater.

    • Your morning sounds so peaceful. Coffee, knitting, and animals to love. I would love to see a photograph of your sweater after you get the cables done.

Prayer is one topic that never gets enough attention. And when it is covered in church these days, it seems the focus is the “fresh new way” of blanking your mind to find “your truth.” Christian mediation and prayer isn’t about blanking your mind, or “centering yourself,” or finding “your truth.” It is an active process of reading God’s Word and talking with Him, and paying attention to what He has to say. Thank you so much for this reminder, as I do not spend nearly enough time with God.

    • You are very welcome Lee. Have you spent any time with God in the past three days? I am still reading the book of Mark in the Bible when I wake up. I am eager to check my e-mail, but I wait.

I have to admit to still not spending enough time with God, and still almost zero time reading anything from the Bible. But that seems to be slowly changing…

Pamela, I am working on new habits, too. I’ve been fasting since noon yesterday and will go until noon today, so I won’t have anything for breakfast. But usually I have a kefir smoothie blended with frozen fruit and spinach. I’ve never fasted for God before. Yesterday afternoon I set my phone alarm to go off every hour and I stopped to pray. I didn’t do great at it. I was distracted a few times, but I have been more conscious of making space for God. This morning I read scripture and my thoughts are on Him and worship.

    Sardines for breakfast? Really?

    • And an orange. Really. I love sardines. How did you break your fast?

      • Janelle

Chinese food after church. A friend was in town and we went together.

  • Am I praying? I don’t know, but I’m appreciating the beautiful gift of a Spring morning my Father gave me.

    • A prayer of being thankful. I am thankful for the gift of sunshine today. Now, what did you eat for breakfast?

      • Veggie frittata, two cups of coffee with whole milk and orange slices.
