If people sat at the computer all day; cakes would not get baked, eggs would not get scrambled, children would not get fed, cars would never be driven, gas would not be needed, and there would be nothing to write about.
I woke up at five this morning to write. I wrote. After I wrote I drove to a nursery, bought two trees, came home and dug two holes. Tonight I planted one of the trees. A Japanese Flowering Cherry tree. A Prunus serraluta, a ‘Kwansan.’
The clay ground was softened by the rain from Hurricane Sandy. My fingers were cold and I had dirt under my fingernails. I planted one tree before the sun set. Next spring my tree will have double pink flowers, three to five in a cluster. I will see the blooms on the Japanese Flowering Cherry tree from the window in the basement when I write.
I stopped writing this morning. I scrambled eggs. I fed my children. I drove a car. I used gas. I have something to write about.
I planted a tree.
