The dishwasher was making funny noises when it ran last week. It sounded like a car braking with no brake pads. And then it stopped working. The water didn’t drain out of the bottom.
“Maybe, someone turned it off in the middle of the cycle?” I thought.
Then I ran it again. The water was still on the bottom when I opened the door to the dishwasher to check.
My dishwasher is broken and I am not going to get a new one.
I won’t get a new one until I can see if I can fix this one. Repair dishwasher: is on my list for this week. I will unplug it, unscrew it and see why it isn’t draining.
If it is broken beyond repair, it won’t be replaced . It will stay under the counter and I will use it to store pots and pans.
I don’t “need” a dishwasher. I want one, but I don’t need one. I need food and shelter and transportation and basic clothing. Dave Ramsey talks about the four basic necessities, “the four walls” in his book , The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness
I could use a plan for financial fitness. A proven plan, would be even better.
I have a plan for physical fitness. Walk and don’t eat sugar, wheat, or processed food. Every morning for the past three days I have gone on a walk early in the morning. Today I walked 2.18 miles in 49 minutes. I did stop to take photographs and let the dog go the bathroom four times, so I wasn’t walking the entire 49 minutes.
My plan for financial fitness is to pay off debt, have a budget, not buy anything unnecessary, and save $1,000 for an emergency fund. Part of the plan was to not buy myself any clothes for 365 days. I am on day 42. I have not bought any clothes since April 30th. I bought a new bra the day before the challenge started.
We have the $1,000 emergency fund saved. Some of it will go to pay for the two flat tires and the leaky gasket I had fixed at Dave’s Automotive Service last week.
There are advantages to not having a dishwasher.
- You won’t leave dishes on the counter, to load “later.” You can wash them right away and not procrastinate.
- You will create family bonding when you wash the dishes and others dry.
- You will save money on water and dishwasher soap.
- You won’t have to listen to the dishwasher run.
- You won’t have to unload the dishwasher later.
Before I invest in another dishwasher I will invest in a water softener, and before I invest in a water softener I will pay off the debt.
I will let you know what I find when I take apart the dishwasher. Hopefully it can be fixed. If not, I have a nice place to store my pots and pans. They can even air dry on the rack.
Would you fix your dishwasher if it was broken?
P.S. The book by Dave Ramsey is an affiliate link through Amazon. The pennies they pay me helps pay for kitty litter for my seven litter boxes. I have four cats.
You don’t have to buy the book to be wise. The book helps. However, I can just tell you right now what to do. Make a budget, give every dollar a name, and don’t spend more than you earn. Oh, and no credit cards. If you don’t have the money don’t buy it.
