When you wake up, what is the first thought in your head?
Are you happy when you wake up?
Do you think, “Oh, crap another day.”
or Do you think, “Oh, wow, another day!”
When I woke up this morning I thought, “Oh crap,The sink is full of dirty dishes.”
My mood in the morning is directly related to the contents of my kitchen sink.
If the kitchen is clean and all the dishes are washed, dried and put away, I wake up thinking, “Oh wow, another day! I am capable and a good housekeeper, and I can handle my life.”
I walk downstairs ready to start the day, delighted with life, because last night I washed, dried and put away all the dishes.
I didn’t wash the dishes last night.
The sink is full of dirty dishes. There is food stuck to the plates, and the pots are still on the stove.
On the kitchen island is a bowl full of cake batter, a bottle of vanilla extract, a bag of flour, a hand-held mixer, oven mitts, a measuring bup, and a cake. My youngest daughter wanted to make a cake late last night. And we didn’t clean up after we made the cake, we watched a movie.
Mrs. Should, who lives in my head, said, “You should always clean up after you cook. You should never go to bed with a dirty kitchen.”
Mrs. Should likes to tell me what to do. But, I am tired of letting Mrs. Should make me feel bad about myself.
Today I choose to be happy, even though my sink is full of dirty dishes.
The greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.”
― Martha Washington
Will you be happy today?

After I wrote this story I went upstairs to photograph the kitchen. I photographed the dishes on the counter, and saw my bottle of Joy dish soap. The label was ripped and the edges were faded, but I could still read the word, “Joy.”
I pray you find “Joy” today.
