I want you to be your true creative self. It is okay to be you. To “be.” We are taught in school to imitate, copy, fit in and not be different. We are taught to follow the rules and to obey. Find your true creative self with a 25¢ notebook.
This is a self-portrait I drew in my 25¢ notebook. I recently cut my hair. Shaved it with a #2 on an electric razor.
How do you become your true creative self?
Give yourself time to think. Think, daydream. Stop looking at what other people are doing, and make something. Give yourself time to daydream. I said that twice, because daydreaming is so important. Think. Think. Think. Then… Make something. Then make something else. Keep making things. Buy a notebook for 25¢, find the least expensive notebook, so you don’t hesitate to rough sketch your ideas.
(p.s. I bought my notebook for 25¢ in August when there was a lot of back to school sales, they might cost more now.)
Dreams have been forgotten because the notebook you bought or were given was too fancy to possibly make a mess, or draw an imperfect picture in it. Do you have a fancy leather-bound journal that you have never written in because you don’t want to make a mess?
On my shelf are several “fancy” notebooks with beautiful thick acid-free 100% cotton paper; the books are empty.
A few nights ago, instead of scrolling on Facebook on my “smart” phone, or looking at my email, I got out my 25¢ notebook and drew some cartoons.
Looking at my smartphone all the time had stopped my imagination.
Now I have a “smart notebook” and a dumb phone. I took Facebook and email off my phone.
I wondered what would happen if my hair kept growing straight out of my head and didn’t lay flat? What would that look like?
