Say yes to yourself. You don’t need permission to create. Don’t give away your power.

Asking someone for permission gives them the power to decide if what you want to do will be allowed or permitted. Say yes to yourself. 

 

Stop asking for permission. Don’t give away your power. (I said it twice on purpose.)

Yes, my neighbor has to ask permission to borrow my lawnmower. The lawnmower belongs to me, and I have the power to control who uses it.
Yes, I need permission to build an addition on my house. The township requires building permits for new construction.
Yes, I have to have permission to travel to certain countries. I have to apply for a visa.

You don’t need anyone’s permission to create

No, you don’t have to ask for permission to buy art supplies and draw.
No, you don’t have to ask for permission to paint ducks wearing shoes.
No, you don’t have to ask permission to compose music using rubber bands and pot lids.

May I, May I, May I?

Stop asking for permission from others to be yourself.

Stop asking for permission to be the artist you dream of.

Sometimes we don’t even ask because we have been conditioned to hear no, say no, and do nothing.

Who would you ask? Who has the power in your life to say no?
Maybe someone said to you, “You can’t draw.” or “You can’t sing.” “Your cake tastes awful.”

So you stopped creating. You stopped believing in yourself. You don’t need anyone’s permission or approval to create.

Ask yourself. “May I have permission to be me?”

And.

Say, “Yes.”

Say yes to yourself.

Ask yourself this question, “May I be me?” Then say, “Yes.”

This is the year where we stop asking for permission to create.  This is the day we stop asking permission to create the art inside of us.

Several years ago on my birthday in October, I got a tattoo on my right forearm of the word, yes.

yes 

yes in 60 point, Times New Roman, lower case. A daily reminder to say yes. Yes to creating. Yes to being me. Yes to finishing. Yes to publishing, Yes to taking the lids off the ink pens and drawing.

Permission: the right or ability to do something that is given by someone who has the power to decide if it will be allowed or permitted.

We give away our power when we ask for permission.

Keep your power, and stop asking for permission to be yourself. Create the art that is inside of you.

Give yourself permission to be you.

The yes tattoo is a daily reminder that I matter. That I have a choice on how I live and how I spend my time.

I have hesitated on creative projects for the past several years. Books that are edited, and formatted, but I didn’t finish them.
Drawings that are still in my head, ink pens that are drying out with the lids uncapped.

I have given myself grace for not finishing the books, or drawing, infidelity and divorce are soul-crushing.

This year I will have been divorced for three years. I am healing; I don’t just accept my new life, I love it. Amor Fati. The book The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday, and The Bible have helped heal my heart. Jesus loves me. This I know. For The Bible tells me so.

It’s time. It’s time to create again. It’s time to say yes. Yes to me. I matter. I am enough.

This year will be different.

You matter. You are enough.
Say yes to yourself.
